With millions of people fleeing the state, you would think that New York lawmakers might have a priority list aimed at addressing some of the crucial, critical problems facing them right now. Apparently that’s not the case, though, because they found time this week to move forward with a proposal to rename Donald J. Trump State Park in Peekskill. It seems that taking shots at the former President of the United States is the most important thing Democrats in the legislature can think of.
“New York State has always been known for its history of welcoming and embracing people of all cultures and backgrounds,” says the bill. “Even our park system reflects these values. According to the Declaration of Policy of the Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation, our parks should foster and strengthen the sense of purpose, well-being and identity of the citizens of this state. The names of these parks and green spaces should embody the goals of uplifting and unifying New Yorkers. For these reasons the Donald J. Trump State Park should be renamed.”
In renaming the property, New York is not just exercising its petty prerogative to “punish” the former president for whatever imaginary crimes they find him guilty of, they are actively violating an agreement the state signed with Trump in 2006. At that time, Trump had purchased the acreage with the intention of building a golf course. Plans for that course ultimately faltered; instead of selling the land, Trump donated it to the state with one stipulation: His name must be prominently displayed on the property.
In a statement, Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Queens) said, “Our parklands should be reflective of New Yorkers that we can be proud of, New Yorkers that have expressed our values. There are a lot of other New Yorkers who are worthy of the honor of having a park named after themselves.
“We’ve been working on this for a number of years, and I certainly am hopeful that it will get the green light and move forward,” she continued. “At the end of the day, we want people to be able to appreciate parkland and be able to visit it without stigma, without shame, and we want to be able to be proud of our open spaces.”
We can hardly be surprised that this is happening in an era where even names like Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson are too controversial for the modern left. Democrats and leftist activists are somehow convinced that they can change history by simply taking down statues and stripping names off buildings.
