Pledge of Allegiance Not “Welcoming” Enough for This Minnesota City

Minnesota, the great U.S. state that gave the nation Rep. Ilhan Omar as a much unwanted gift last November, is now home to a controversy over – what else? – the symbols of national patriotism. The St. Louis Park City Council decided on June 17 that they would no longer recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of their meetings, seeing as how it might not be “welcoming” to some of the immigrants living in the area.

“We concluded,” said Council Member Tim Brausen, “that in order to create a more welcoming environment to a diverse community we’re going to forgo saying the Pledge of Allegiance before every meeting.”

In an interview with a local news station, another council member, Anne Mavity, said that there was no good reason to continue reciting the Pledge before meetings.

“Not everyone who does business with the city or has a conversation is a citizen,” Mavity said. “They certainly don’t need to come into city council chambers and pledge their allegiance to our country in order to tell us what their input is about a sidewalk in front of their home.”

A home…where, Ms. Mavity? A home where, exactly? Oh, right, the United States.

But so continues this infection of American patriotism, where it is suddenly shameful to people of color, to immigrants, and to liberals of all stripes for us to take pride in our national symbols. Whether it’s the Pledge of Allegiance, the national anthem, or the flag itself, there’s always someone out there waiting to call you a “racist,” a “xenophobe,” or some other kind of bigot for cherishing tradition. And there always seem to be politicians willing to grease the squeakiest wheels.

On Monday night, the council held a meeting to reconsider the hastily-devised decision, and they were met with more than 100 citizens waving American flags, chanting “USA!” and encouraging the council to reinstate the pledge. Ultimately, the council reached no decision this week, but the protests drew national scrutiny to the little town of St. Louis Park.

“We must appreciate who we are as Americans and what brings us together,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) told Sean Hannity on Wednesday night.

“They canceled the pledge to make a ‘more welcoming environment,’” wrote Christian leader Franklin Graham. “The pledge says, ‘I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America & to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, w/ liberty & justice for all.’ Sounds welcoming to me!”

Yeah, well, Graham and Crenshaw know as well as anyone what’s really going on here. It’s disgusting, it’s outlandish, but it’s not irrational. The left is out to destroy the “old” America in order the make room for the new one. This is just one more piece of the puzzle.
