One of the most remarkable things about the left in this country is their ability to create controversy out of thin air. If they can find even one individual “offended” by something – or feign offense on their behalf – they have a political movement to get behind. These things range from the silly (manspreading on the subway) to the ridiculous (the current argument over transgender bathroom rights). One thing they have in common, though: No one cares until the liberals in the media decide to make it so.
Take all the controversy over the Washington Redskins. According to a new poll by the Washington Post, 90% of Native Americans are not offended by the name. Even those Native Americans who identify as “liberal” say the name is fine. This is an issue that has been propagated on their behalf by guilty white liberals who aren’t happy unless they’re making someone miserable.
“The Washington Redskins team, our fans and community have always believed our name represents honor, respect and pride. Today’s Washington Post polling shows Native Americans agree,” said team owner Dan Snyder. “We are gratified by this overwhelming support from the Native American community, and the team will proudly carry the Redskins name.”
Snyder has been under relentless pressure for the last couple of years to change the name. Obama’s patent office even canceled their trademark. Some broadcast announcers and sports journalists will no longer refer to the team as the Redskins. The controversy has even dribbled down to college and high school athletics. Just this year, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill forbidding the state’s public schools from using the mascot or the name.
Now, if this were in service of correcting a major American evil, that would be one thing. But it isn’t. No one cares. The only people who care about this are those who want to stick their noses in the air and pretend they’re so much more enlightened than the rest of the world.
They’ll never admit they were wrong, of course. They’ll just start pounding Native Americans with their callous propaganda until they get the numbers on their side. These poor Indians don’t even know they’re being insulted…we must show them!
Well, have a blast. In the meantime, the rest of us will be over here in the real world, watching the game and not caring.
