At long last, we have our first unredacted look at the Department of Justice memo laying out Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation mandate. With portions of the memo falling under declassification at the end of April, Americans can now see that the memo – written by former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein – relied heavily on baseless conspiracy theories straight from the pen of discredited spy Christopher Steele and his infamous phony dossier.
That’s right: After months and months of hearing Mueller and every House Democrat tell us that the dossier had almost nothing to do with the Trump/Russia investigation…it turns out that it was absolutely central to the probe.
What a shock.
Signed and delivered on August 2, 2017, the Rosenstein memo asked Mueller to investigate whether former Trump campaign associate Carter Page “committed a crime or crimes by colluding with Russian government officials with respect to the Russian government’s efforts to interfere with the 2016 election.”
The memo then mandated Mueller to do the same in respect to former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.
Neither Page nor Manafort were ever convicted of committing any crime in relation to Russia’s election meddling, collusion with the Kremlin, or the hack of the Democratic National Committee.
The memo also directed Mueller to look into whether or not Michael Flynn violated the obscure Logan Act, which makes it a crime to negotiate with foreign governments under the false pretense that you are a representative of the U.S. federal government. The law has never been used to prosecute an American citizen, but it was used as a pretense for the FBI to interrogate Flynn and ultimately charge him with lying to federal officers.
In remarks on Wednesday night, Fox News host Sean Hannity said the memo was clear evidence of the Deep State’s “abuse of power.”
“When this memo was written in August of 2017, the FBI already knew that the Steele Dossier was debunked. They already knew. They knew it in January of that year,” said Hannity.
“He’s in trouble, in my humble opinion,” Hannity said of Rosenstein. “But he still gave Mueller the OK to go on his collusion witch hunt after they knew and had all the information that it was false. And Comey and Rosenstein signed off on the subsequent fraudulent FISA application — again with the bulk of information being Hillary Clinton’s bought-and-paid-for unverifiable Russian-disinformation dossier. You can’t write this in a novel.”
It’s frightening to think that these federal officials thought they could get away with this obvious abuse of the Constitution and this naked attempt to bring down a duly-elected President. It’s even more frightening to imagine that they might turn out to be right. Hopefully, Attorney General William Barr will see to it that they are not.
