Springsteen: No Democrats Can Beat Trump in 2020

In unusually candid remarks this weekend, legendary rocker Bruce Springsteen said – regretfully – that he did not believe that Democrats stood much of a chance against President Trump in 2020. Lamenting the lack of star power in the field of potential presidential candidates, Springsteen told The Sunday Times that he was concerned about Trump winning re-election in a landslide.

“I don’t see anyone out there at the moment,” he said. “The man who can beat Trump, or the woman who can beat Trump. You need someone who can speak some of the same language, and the Democrats don’t have an obvious, effective presidential candidate.”

Springsteen said that the midterm elections failed to produce the big blue wave he’d been hoping to see.

“I’d like to have seen a much more full-throated [rejection] of the past two years,” he said. “The country is very divided right now – there are a lot of people drinking the snake oil. So it’s a very difficult time here in the States.”

But when the paper asked The Boss if he’d consider running for the Democratic nomination himself, he said he wasn’t interested.

“Not in any way, in any form,” he said. “I’d be terrible.”

Say what you will about Springsteen’s politics, but he seems more sober-minded about the Democrats’ prospects in 2020 than most so-called political experts. The candidates slated to vie for the nomination read like a who’s who of has-beens and never-will-be’s. The only one who will head into the campaign season with even the slightest tailwind is Bernie Sanders, and we’re still not convinced that his 2016 arena tour was anything more than a flash in the pan. Once he invites the full scrutiny of the Republican Party/White House – once he’s really forced to compete with the big boys – we have a feeling his brand of democratic socialism is going to crumble like a brittle skeleton.

So who else is there? Kamala Harris? Cory Booker? Pocahontas? Joe Biden? Dare we ask…Hillary Clinton?

This is not the kind of star-studded lineup the Democrats need if they want to have any chance of defeating Trump. And yet, there’s no one else. The periphery is filled with even more disastrous choices, including Michael Bloomberg, Michael Avenatti, Tom Steyer, and Beto O’Rourke. One of these guys is going to be the next President of the United States? Are you kidding?

The last 40 years of Democrat presidential politics proves one thing: If the left can’t produce an individual of remarkable charisma – the IT factor – they can’t win on policy alone. Because, of course, their policies suck. So until and unless they can dig up the next coming of Obama or Bill Clinton, they are going to have a very tough time winning back the White House.
