Steve Bannon Says He Helped Push Whistleblower Off NatSec Council
In an interview with VICE last week, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said that he was involved in the push to remove Eric Ciaramella from the National Security Council in 2017. Without specifically naming Ciaramella as the Ukraine whistleblower, Bannon confirmed to VICE that he was instrumental in pushing the rumored rat from his position at the White House.
“When I was in the White House there was a number of people in the National Security Council — the named individual eventually got let go, I believe because people were suspicious, not me, but other people around him were suspicious about his leaking, and that’s why he was let go,” Bannon said.
Bannon divorced himself from Republicans who argue that the whistleblower should be publicly identified, insisting that the public doesn’t need to know his name as long as they know his motivations and political connections.
“I don’t think the individual naming of the whistleblower is important, although there was a story in The Washington Times that tied me to the efforts to get, at least, the gentleman who was named out of the National Security Council,” said Bannon.
The VICE reporter asked Bannon, “Is that true?”
“The individual that was named, absolutely true,” Bannon said.
Ciaramella’s identity as the whistleblower is beyond dispute at this point, if only because he would have made a public statement disavowing the reports if it wasn’t him. Gosh, for as much “danger” as the whistleblower is supposed to be in if we learn his identity, anyone falsely alleged to be the guy would obviously rush to clear their name. Ciaramella hasn’t done so, which is basically as good as holding a press conference to confirm that he blew the whistle. With his identity so exposed, you have to wonder why doesn’t do that.
Actually, we kid. You don’t need to wonder about that at all, because it’s obvious. If Ciaramella exposes himself to the light of questioning and scrutiny, the American people will see very quickly that this entire shameful episode is a partisan sham. Ciaramella’s connections to John Brennan and Joe Biden make him unfit for service in the Trump administration, and they certainly undermine any credibility his initial report ever carried. Democrats want to say that all of their hearsay witnesses confirm his original report, but all they confirm is that they’ve sipped from the same batch of Kool-Aid.
“I think it’s important to see the mentality and intent of people who did this,” Bannon told VICE.
Exactly. And as long as the whistleblower hides in the shadows, the public is denied that crucial privilege.
