You’d think that even the dumbest left-wing gun activists would be wary about claiming an actual gun manufacturer as one of their allies against so-called assault rifles, but maybe we’re underestimating just how deep the stupid runs. Because when Colt announced this week that they were putting a halt to domestic production of the civilian AR-15 this week, the media ran with the story, insinuating that the manufacturer was bending to the will of the “common sense gun control” crowd.
“Venerable gun manufacturer Colt says it will stop producing the AR-15, among other rifles, for the consumer market in the wake of many recent mass shootings in which suspects used the weapon,” reports ABC News.
They later quote Colt CEO Dennis Veilleux: “At the end of the day, we believe it is good sense to follow consumer demand and to adjust as market dynamics change. Colt has been a stout supporter of the Second Amendment for over 180 years, remains so, and will continue to provide its customers with the finest quality firearms in the world.”
So, even though Veilleux and Colt support the Second Amendment, they’ve just seen too much carnage unfold at the hands of their popular rifle. Thus, they have no other choice but to succumb to public pressure and take the rifle off the market. The left is winning, Colt has surrendered to the fury of Everytown for Gun Safety and the Democrats, and we’re closer than ever to an outright ban on assault rifles. Crack a bottle, folks, it’s celebration time!
Except for this small paragraph near the end of ABC’s story: “The company did not mention mass shootings in its statement about stopping production and instead blamed the indefinite pause in making the weapon on a ‘significant excess manufacturing capacity.’”
Oh. Wait, what? Colt is stopping production of the rifle because there’s already too many of them sitting on store shelves? In other words, they’re doing what any other sensible business would do in response to excess inventory? How…how does that relate to what you mentioned in the first paragraph about “many recent mass shootings”? It would appear that one has absolutely nothing to do with the other?
But this is the modern left-wing media for you, connecting dots that aren’t there to tell a story that isn’t true. Colt is faced with a normal, mundane shift in consumer demand, they’re making the necessary adjustments, and…that’s about all. In truth, this isn’t a news story at all, of interest only to intense followers of the gun manufacturing world. It might make a decent half-page story in “Guns & Ammo,” but it doesn’t really belong on ABC News. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for the fact that the left has turned the term “AR-15” into a catch-all bogeyman meaning “death, destruction, and right-wing recklessness.”
There are plenty of Colt AR-15s still in the marketplace, and there are plenty of competitors with similar rifles still producing them and selling them. We can’t exactly call this fake news, but it’s pretty damn close.
