The Left’s Ad-Boycott Machine Revs Up Against Tucker Carlson
Leftists in Hollywood and social media have become particularly adept at using advertiser boycotts to shut down speech with which they disagree, and they are at it once again. Only months after Parkland survivor David Hogg turned loose his social media zombies on Laura Ingraham’s advertisers (because she made a smart remark about, of all things, his college prospects), the liberals are at it again. This time they are targeting another primetime Fox News Channel host, Tucker Carlson.
Here’s what Carlson said on his show that got the left up in a tizzy:
“Our leaders demand that you shut up and accept this. We have a moral obligation to admit the world’s poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer and dirtier and more divided. Immigration is a form of atonement.”
This has, of course, been parroted in the media as Carlson saying that “immigrants make our country dirtier,” which is what just about every headline has said. Is that what he said? Is that what he said in any way? No, this is as intellectually dishonest as when the media told everyone that Trump called Mexicans “rapists.” It’s completely divorced from context, completely snipped of its actual antecedents – not immigrants, but “the world’s poor” – and made to sound much, much worse than it actually is.
But snippets out of context are all that really matter in a world where 90% of people get all of their news from headlines + comment sections. And so now you have a legion of leftists, most of whom have never watched a single segment of Carlson’s show (including the one in question), spamming his advertisers and strongly encouraging them to drop their sponsorships.
And because these advertisers are afraid of their own shadows, they are all too eager to bow to the mob. First off the boat was Pacific Life insurance, which released the following statement:
“Pacific Life’s national advertising campaign runs on numerous networks and cable stations and on a variety of news, business, and sports programs. One of our ads appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show last night following a segment where Mr. Carlson made a number of statements regarding immigration. As a company, we strongly disagree with Mr. Carlson’s statements. Our customer base and our workforce reflect the diversity of our great nation, something we take great pride in. We will not be advertising on Mr. Carlson’s show in the coming weeks as we reevaluate our relationship with his program.”
SmileDirectClub and Nautilus have also reportedly bailed on the show.
In a statement supporting Carlson, Fox News was defiant.
“It is a shame that left wing advocacy groups, under the guise of being supposed ‘media watchdogs’ weaponize social media against companies in an effort to stifle free speech,” a spokesperson said. “We continue to stand by and work with our advertisers through these unfortunate and unnecessary distractions.”
The left will use any excuse whatsoever to shut down free speech, whether it means de-platforming conservatives on college campuses or driving away their ad dollars when they appear on television. This is how frightened they are of an alternative point of view. This is how desperately they want a country where only one opinion – THEIRS – is permitted.
This is how terrified they are of the truth.
