The Media Has a New Crisis: Trump’s Approval Ratings are Soaring

Whether or not the mainstream media was guilty of emphasizing fear and panic at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic crisis, it is beyond dispute that they’ve used it as a golden opportunity to bash President Trump and his administration. It is the new Russia Collusion. It is the new Ukraine Controversy. It is the new Stormy Daniels/Michael Cohen/Kids in Cages/Emoluments Violations/You Name It. From the moment this virus started tracking in the U.S., the media has tried to lay the blame for it on Donald J. Trump.

Unfortunately – as they’re only now starting to realize – this attempt to knock Trump off his perch has backfired just as badly as their previous efforts. And that’s got some of the most prominent members of the left-wing media thinking about a new strategy: Namely, taking Trump off the air until his approval numbers come down.

See, at a time of crisis, the nation looks to the president for words of instruction, comfort, and optimism. President Trump has been delivering all three in his daily coronavirus press briefings, turning him into The Man at a time the left is interested in turning the nation’s focus onto Joe Biden. His approval numbers are skyrocketing as Americans see Trump taking charge, surrounding himself with the best experts in the country, and shuttling the U.S. through one of the most challenging times in modern history.

Oh, and the media absolutely hates it.

Now, they can’t come right out and say, “Dear viewers, we’re alarmed by the coronavirus, but we’re even more alarmed at watching Trump’s approval ratings soar. At this rate, we’ll have absolutely no chance of beating him in November. Therefore, we see no other alternative but to take the unprecedented step of turning our cameras off the press briefings. Here’s Joe Biden, live from his living room.”

No, that would be a little too much like honesty.

So instead, we’re hearing stuff like this from the Washington Post’s Margaret Sullivan: “These White House sessions—ostensibly meant to give the public critical and truthful information about this frightening crisis—are in fact working against that end. Rather, they have become a daily stage for Trump to play his greatest hits to captive audience members. They come in search of life-or-death information, but here’s what they get from him instead: Self-aggrandizement… Media-bashing… Exaggeration and outright lies.”

This from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough: “There’s no public benefit to this briefing. News networks should cut away.”

This from his colleague, Rachel Maddow: “If it were up to me, and it’s not, I would stop putting those briefings on live TV. Not out of spite, but because it’s misinformation. If the president does end up saying anything true, you can run it as tape. But if he keeps lying like he has been every day on stuff this important, we should, all of us should stop broadcasting it. Honestly, it’s going to cost lives.”

By “cost lives,” of course, she actually means, “it’s going to cost us the election.”

Funny how the people calling for an end to the broadcast of Trump’s briefings are the same people who have been trashing him throughout his entire presidency. It’s almost like there’s a connection of some kind…
