Trump Blasts Democrats for Chasing “Fake News” on Russia

On Monday, just a few hours before FBI Director James Comey was scheduled to testify before the House Intelligence Committee on matters of Russian hacking, President Trump lashed out at Democrats on Twitter, accusing them of using the Russian collusion theory to distract from their embarrassing loss in the November elections.

“James Clapper and others stated that there is no evidence Potus colluded with Russia. This story is FAKE NEWS and everyone knows it!” Trump wrote.

Former CIA chief James Clapper did indeed say on multiple occasions that the intelligence community had not yet turned up any evidence to prove that the Trump campaign was in on the Russian hacking, and his comments were backed up this weekend by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes.

On Twitter, the president had more to say about the controversy.

“The Democrats made up and pushed the Russian story as an excuse for running a terrible campaign,” Trump wrote. “Big advantage in Electoral College & lost!”

He also took a swipe at Hillary, suggesting that her team’s hands were not clean when it came to meeting with Russian officials.

“What about all of the contact with the Clinton campaign and the Russians? Also, is it true that the DNC would not let the FBI in to look?” Trump asked.

Trump said there was a much bigger fish for investigators to fry.

“The real story that Congress, the FBI and all others should be looking into is the leaking of Classified information. Must find leaker now!” he tweeted.

The leaks, along with Trump’s accusation that President Obama authorized surveillance of his Manhattan offices, are certain to be a topic of conversation when Comey testifies in front of Congress. Republicans, whether they are fully on board with President Trump or not, have been consistent in their criticism of the leaks, and a full congressional investigation is soon to begin.

Trump is understandably eager to put the Russian story in the past, because it is threatening to overshadow his presidency and undermine his agenda. The Democrats aren’t just trying to make excuses for their November loss; they are actively trying to throw Donald Trump out of the White House. And if they can’t actually do that, they are going to keep throwing suspicion into the air in an attempt to keep Republicans from pushing legislation through to the president’s desk.

No leader can be effective under these circumstances. It’s not only unfair to Trump, it’s an insult to the 60 million Americans who voted him into office. Put-up-or-shut-up time has arrived. We need to get to work.
