Over the course of his campaign, Donald Trump has been accused repeatedly of being a liberal in Republican clothing. His past statements on certain issues, including abortion, have worried would-be supporters. While Trump has brushed aside donations and public statements he’s made to and about Democrats, he has not, until Saturday, spent much time explaining his position on abortion. In an op-ed for the Washington Examiner this weekend, however, he rectified that omission.
“Let me be clear,” Trump wrote. “I am pro-life.”
The billionaire went on to argue that the legalization of abortion in 1973 led to real problems in America. “Over time, our culture of life in this country has started sliding toward a culture of death,” he wrote. “Over 50 million Americans never had the chance to enjoy the opportunities offered by this country. They are missing, and they are missed.”
Trump is, of course, referring to the millions of unborn babies who have been aborted since the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade. He explained that though he was not in favor of abortion, he would allow for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or incidents when the life of the mother was in jeopardy. He also took issue with federal funds going to Planned Parenthood.
“Public funding of abortion providers is an insult to people of conscience at the least and an affront to good governance at best,” Trump wrote.
Make no mistake, Trump had to make his thoughts on this subject clear. There aren’t probably many single-issue voters out there, but for those that do head to the polls with one issue in mind, that issue is often abortion. Christian conservatives believe that abortion is nothing more or less than legalized murder writ large, and there is simply no way some voters will consider supporting a candidate who does not believe the same. The odds are long when it comes to overturning Roe v. Wade, but as long as there are conservatives on the Supreme Court, the dream remains viable.
While few voters may be convinced that Trump is more passionately oriented against abortion than Ted Cruz or Mike Huckabee, they can rest assured that he is a far better choice than any Democrat. Hillary Clinton has made it clear that she not only favors abortion but that she would like to see the Hyde Amendment struck down. That would remove the pretense from the federal funding of Planned Parenthood and allow Congress to put taxpayer money directly towards abortion. Not only would we as a country permit this massacre under her desired administration, we would fund it. That’s completely unacceptable to anyone with a conscience.
After all the fireworks and the drama, it comes back to the issues that matter. And for a great many Americans, this one matters more than all the rest.
