Trump Rains Down Hellfire on Turncoat Michael Cohen
In a series of tweets on Friday, President Donald Trump left no doubt about where his relationship with his former attorney, Michael Cohen, now stands. After Cohen released a tape of himself and Trump purportedly discussing a payment of money to be made to a woman who claims she had an affair with the president, his lawyer, Lanny Davis, had indicated to everyone who will listen that there is more to come. Cohen, he told CNN this week, has flipped, and he knows where the bodies are buried.
Whether there is merit to what Cohen actually knows or not, his betrayal has clearly rattled the president. After a story came out saying that Cohen will testify to the fact that Trump knew in advance that his son and other campaign officials would be meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower in June of 2016, the president could hold his tongue no longer.
“I did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr.,” Trump wrote. “Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam (Taxi cabs maybe?). He even retained Bill and Crooked Hillary’s lawyer. Gee, I wonder if they helped him make the choice!”
This was not the first time Trump questioned the ethics or the credibility of his former lawyer. Two days earlier, he asked, “What kind of a lawyer would tape a client? So sad! Is this a first, never heard of it before? Why was the tape so abruptly terminated (cut) while I was presumably saying positive things? I hear there are other clients and many reporters that are taped – can this be so? Too bad!”
It has, indeed, come out that Cohen surreptitiously recorded an interview he gave with CNN’s Chris Cuomo; it remains to be seen if he taped other clients and other meetings. It could be that he set up a nonstop recording device to run in his offices, in which case there’s really no telling what all he has collected. Like Trump, we’ve never heard of a lawyer who would keep such a record. This is Nixon-levels of paranoia.
Here’s what’s really funny, though. Ever since that raid on Cohen’s office earlier this year, the media has been telling us that Cohen is a scumbag, a terrible lawyer, and a dishonest charlatan who is also no doubt a traitor to the nation. But now that he’s turned against Trump, oh, suddenly he’s this great patriot who just wants to do right by his family and get out from under the abusive relationship he’s had with the president. Poor little guy!
Anyway, Trump also took time on Friday to slam Mueller’s investigation once again.
“Arrived back in Washington last night from a very emotional reopening of a major U.S. Steel plant in Granite City, Illinois, only to be greeted with the ridiculous news that the highly conflicted Robert Mueller and his gang of 13 Angry Democrats obviously cannot find Collusion,” he wrote. “The only Collusion with Russia was with the Democrats, so now they are looking at my Tweets (along with 53 million other people) – the rigged Witch Hunt continues! How stupid and unfair to our Country.”
As we said yesterday, if Mueller is so desperate for evidence that he’s scouring the president’s Twitter feed, this investigation has officially entered the territory of the absurd. Of course, when you take a step back and really look at the cast of characters involved in all of this: Stormy Daniels, Michael Avenatti, Peter Strzok, Carter Page, Sergei Kislyak, and Michael Cohen, to name but a few, it becomes clear that we’ve been sailing in absurd waters for quite some time.
