Noting the extraordinary cold snap hitting much of the United States over the holidays, President Trump took to his Twitter account to poke the Climate Change Bear with some lighthearted trolling.
“In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Year’s Eve on record,” Trump wrote Thursday. “Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against. Bundle up!”
Trump knew what he was doing, of course, and he easily inspired exactly the kind of reaction that you would expect. A thousand liberal blogs and websites went into a frenzy, accusing the president of confusing a short-term weather phenomenon with the longer trend that is the climate.
Of course, they never seem to make this distinction when a hurricane hits or a town in New Mexico hits a record high on a hot summer day. No, when those things happen, they trot out all the experts to talk about global warming and the impending death of every polar bear in the Northern Hemisphere. But when New England is poised for record snowfall, they wave their hand dismissively and lecture you on the difference between weather and climate. How convenient.
It also gives a chance to go back in time, like the Daily Caller did, to see how some of the left’s most dire climate change warnings are panning out. They brought us back to a New York Times editorial from 2014, which warned us that we could be on the precipice of experiencing “the end of snow!” How dreadful!

Americans are not taking seriously decades of snow drought, skiing enthusiast Porter Fox blared in the editorial for the NYT in 2014. The winter of 2014 was unseasonably warm due to that year’s El Nino, a cyclical weather pattern that typically leads to warmer winters and atrocious hurricane seasons.
“What viewers might not see is the 16 million cubic feet of snow that was stored under insulated blankets last year to make sure those slopes remained white,” said Fox, a feature editor at Powder magazine.
Fox was referring to what he called an unprecedented lack of snow on the Caucus Mountains in Sochi, Russia, home of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The absence of the white puffy stuff, he noted, was due in large part to high greenhouse gas levels that many scientists believe cause global warming: “If greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise – they grew 41 percent between 1990 and 2008 – then snowfall, winter, and skiing will no longer exist as we know them by the end of the century.”
Well, the “end of the century” is a long way away, which is why climate change nutters have chosen those metrics to discuss the problem of global warming. They’ve learned the “Back to the Future II” lesson – if you’re going to make predictions about the future, make sure it’s a future that nobody alive today will actually live to see. That way, you’ll never have to admit that you were wrong!
Not that they ever would, anyway.
