Two Advocates of Police Reform Carjacked Just Hours Apart

Police said “multiple gunshots” were fired during the incident but Lightford and her husband weren’t physically hurt.

The suspects fled in the Mercedes and Durango, according to police.

Lightford, the state Senate majority leader, said in a statement that she was still trying to process the trauma.

“First and foremost I am thankful that my husband and I are alive and physically unharmed. I am trying to process the trauma of what happened. I want to thank everyone who has offered their love and support,” she said.

Her ordeal came hours before Scanlon, a fellow Democrat, was carjacked at gunpoint in a separate incident as she returned to her blue Acura MDX at about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Scanlon was targeted in South Philly by two men in a dark SUV who demanded she hand over her keys, police said.

Her personal cellphone, government-issued phone and purse were inside her car when the carjackers took off.

Scanlon’s spokesperson said she was “physically unharmed” following the ordeal.

Her car was found in neighboring Delaware with five suspects inside just hours later, according to police.

The suspects, whose names weren’t immediately released, were all in custody Thursday.

Mayor Jim Kenney said he was “appalled to learn of this violent crime” against the congresswoman, whom he described as his friend and colleague.

“My thoughts are with her during what I’m sure is a traumatic time,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in our city, and sadly that hasn’t always been the case this year. It’s disheartening and infuriating that criminals feel emboldened to commit such a reckless crime in the middle of the day in what should be a place of peace — one of our city’s parks.”

Both Scanlon and Lightford have previously spoken out about police reform — especially in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis last year.

They both co-sponsored bills in their respective offices that called for mental health specialists to be dispatched instead of police to some incidents.

“We have seen too many lives taken and communities devastated by police brutality and racial profiling,” Scanlon tweeted after Floyd’s death. “Action is long overdue. @HouseDemocrats are fighting for REAL reform in our country’s police departments. #JusticeInPolicing.”

Hope mental health specialists were dispatched to help both Scanlon and Lightford. There is nothing like real experience to help government officials realize the stupidity of their thinking. I can imagine both women were scared for their safety when carjacked. I hope both know how fortunate they were that neither were physically hurt. Let’s hope both Scanlon and Lightford rethink their positions on “police reform.”

I knew from the onset of the demonization of police that sooner or later there would be at least one high profile victim and the entire concept would come crashing down. None of these ridiculous leftist policies is new and I’ve seen it all before. What truly disgusts me is the lack of concern for the victims that were created because of the policies and political narrative espoused by democrats and the media. They in fact created this emboldening of the criminal element yet never have or never will be held accountable. So many unnecessary deaths rapes and thefts that simply could have been avoided. It’s not a special gift to predict obvious consequences for foolish ideological concepts. In the end we see the same old pattern. Liberals wind up the minorities into a frenzy..Giving them false hopes that finally things will get better and violence is the way to get it done. Meanwhile most of the victims are minorities themselves and nothing is changed. When it’s said that some blacks “get off the plantation” it’s not lip service it has real world implications. This is why republican leadership is the true helpers of minorities. The only answer to true freedom is economic opportunity. It’s the only way the poor are lifted up permanently. Pointing fingers at whites and blaming them isn’t going to help anyone. Most white folks don’t hate people based on skin color but they do fear criminals in their neighborhoods. Unfortunately when there’s no economic opportunities for inner city blacks whites Latinos etc the obvious response is crime. Growing up poor generation after generation and never seeing any hope of improvement the mindset of that individual isn’t going to coincide with mindset of suburbia of all colors. So we once again see how the democrats are the real racists. They want to keep minorities beholden to them and government and never truly let them taste the freedom that economic opportunity can give. I wish just one black leader would tell the truth and make our country greater than ever. Obama had that chance and he just pushed the same tired old rhetoric that white people and capitalism are evil and the only path for blacks is to tear it all down. It’s time for the kind of change that Trump was providing. Unfortunately the tired old swamp masters just won’t allow it. So who is really racist and who wants freedom for all Americans? You be the judge. God Bless America
