It’s hard to let go of your strongest beliefs. Even in the face of overwhelming evidence, science tells us that people have a tough time changing their minds about subjects that are near and dear to their hearts. We have a way of not only developing opinions but becoming so closely identified with those positions that to let them go would be like letting a part of ourselves go. This is a good thing to watch out for in life for many reasons, not the least of which it can keep you from looking like a complete idiot on national television.
For one example, we can look at Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who was on MSNBC this past Friday, apparently admitting that she either hasn’t read or can’t understand the Mueller report. We would be inclined to believe either, quite frankly.
“What surprises me more than anything else is that the Republicans, in particular, the right-wing conservative Republicans are not patriotic,” Waters said. “They are allowing this president to have this relationship with Putin and the Kremlin and Russia who are our known enemies and they are working with them and have not stopped. They will not criticize them, and he will not do going deal with the fact that they undermined our election system. That has shocked me. That has surprised me even though I said nothing does. The fact that the Republicans who claim to be so patriotic and claim to love this country are siding with the president and Russia against our democracy. That shocks me.”
This is a woman who still believes, deep down in her heart, that Trump and Russia hooked up in 2016, thwarted the election, and stole the presidency. She doesn’t even realize how foolish she sounds when she harps on this conspiracy theory in the Post-Mueller era. But then, Maxine Waters does not realize a great many things.
She’s not alone in her confusion. On the same channel, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) was on “MTP Daily” expressing her view that the Mueller report actually proved that collusion took place. Imagine that!
“You know, what’s so disturbing is that Donald Trump is so lacking in confidence about his ability to actually get elected without the help of a foreign power, and particularly a foreign adversary, that they will go to any lengths and that he will instruct and allow his colleagues and allies to go to any lengths to be able to secure his success in an election,” she said.
“He did that in Russia, with Russia,” she lied. “It’s been very evident through his desire to hide all of his conversations that he’s had with President Putin. He very specifically has sided with President Putin on his ridiculous assertions that they didn’t have anything to do with interfering in our elections over our intelligence leaders, who have clearly said that there was interference. The president is hiding the fact that there was collusion, there was obstruction of justice to cover that up. And we can get all the answers we need if we simply are given the information that Congress is entitled to.”
Um, you were. It’s called the Mueller report. And your refusal to accept the conclusions in that report is proof that nothing in this world will EVER convince you to let go of your collusion beliefs. It’s become too much of who you are. You can’t bear to part with it. Because if Trump actually won the 2016 election fair and square…well, you can’t even consider the thought. You’d rather look like a brainless twit than confront that fact.
