Victory: Trump Wins Again as Mexico Relents to New Immigration Agreement
It’s become almost too predictable: Trump proposes or implements a policy, the left goes nuts, Republicans nervously bite their fingernails, the media tells us it’s a terrible idea, and then, fast-forward a few days or weeks, it turns out Trump was right. Maybe it hasn’t turned out that way every single time, but this pattern has played out enough that you’d think the president’s critics would stay their tongues when he comes out with something new. Wouldn’t they like to be right for once in their lives?
But in this weird age of media malpractice, being right isn’t as important as getting clicks. And to get clicks, the left-wing media knows it needs to play to its #Resistance-minded audience. That audience has what appears to be an insatiable appetite for Trump criticism and fake news, so that’s exactly what the media shovels. They did it again last week when Trump announced his plan to slap tariffs on all Mexican goods. Worst idea ever, they all said. Get ready to pay $600,000 for your next car.
And then it happened. Again.
“President Trump backed off his plan to impose tariffs on all Mexican goods and announced via Twitter on Friday night that the United States had reached an agreement with Mexico to reduce the flow of migrants to the southwestern border,” reported The New York Times. “Mr. Trump tweeted the announcement only hours after returning from Europe and following several days of intense and sometimes difficult negotiations between American and Mexican officials in Washington.”
You have to love how they report it, no? “President Trump backed off…” As if HE was the one who capitulated to the Mexicans! The whole point of the tariffs was to get Mexico to agree to do more on illegal immigration, and that’s exactly what he achieved. Mexico will now consent to keep asylum-seekers in their country until they are scheduled to have their hearing in U.S. immigration court. That alone will go a long way towards solving our current crisis at the border, and it could be enough to dissuade lying migrants from trying to skate around our generous asylum policies.
“The United States looks forward to working alongside Mexico to fulfill these commitments so that we can stem the tide of illegal migration across our southern border and to make our border strong and secure,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.
It is worth noting that there is a clause in the joint declaration that Mexico should not ignore. In it, the Trump administration says that if Mexican action does not “have the expected results” within 90 days, additional measures will be determined. That means the tariffs could very well go back on. Mexico has every incentive to now realize that Trump is not playing around on illegal immigration. They can either step up…or they can pay the consequences.
Doesn’t it feel nice to have a president actually willing to do something, no matter how unpopular it might be with the media?
