We Still Need a National Reckoning on the Russian Collusion Hoax

The Democrats and the mainstream media – to the extent that these are separate entities – have done a masterful job of “moving on” from one of the biggest debacles in the history of journalism and politics.

More than a year after Special Counsel Robert Mueller turned in his final report, debunking all but the silliest, most trivial aspects of the Trump/Russia Collusion Conspiracy Theory, we have still had no national reckoning about this years-long hoax. By both inventing new stories (The Ukraine Hoax) and lucking into other national distractions (COVID, Race Riots), the Democrat Media Industrial Complex has neatly avoided taking responsibility for this unprecedented betrayal of the public trust.

This under-the-rug sweeping has been so thorough, indeed, that certain members of the media still have the gall to pretend as though it wasn’t a hoax all along. Rep. Adam Schiff continues to show his face on television, after all.

These people should be so shamed for their systematic lies that they have no recourse but to find small-time employment in the private sector – far, far away from the lights and glitter of either Capitol Hill or the New York media. Instead, they’ve been allowed to not only keep their high-profile jobs, but actually thrive in the post-Hoax era. In an age where you can get cancelled for publishing an op-ed from a sitting U.S. senator, lying to the American people about high treason has absolutely no consequences.

The flip side of avoiding any reckoning is that the media also feels justified in continuing to ignore the hard evidence about the Obama administration’s spying on the Trump campaign. It was on this subject that George Washington University Professor Jonathan Turley pontificated in a recent column for The Hill:

The Washington press corps seems engaged in a collective demonstration of the legal concept of willful blindness, or deliberately ignoring facts, following the release of yet another declassified document that directly refutes past statements about the Russia collusion investigation. The document shows the FBI used a security briefing of then candidate Donald Trump and top aides to gather possible evidence for Crossfire Hurricane, its code name for the Russia investigation.

What is astonishing is that the media has refused to see what should be one of the biggest stories in decades. The Obama administration targeted the campaign of the opposing party based on false evidence. The media endlessly covered former Obama administration officials ridiculing suggestions of spying on the Trump campaign or of  improper conduct in the Russia investigation. When Attorney General William Barr told the Senate last year that he believed spying did occur, he was lambasted in the media, including by James Comey and others involved in that investigation. The mocking “wow” response of the fired FBI director received extensive coverage.

As Turley points out, Max Boot of the Washington Post recently criticized Republicans for weaving “absurd conspiracy theories” about how the FBI “supposedly spied on the Trump campaign.” This is the kind of gaslighting you can only get away with when you have deliberately kept your readers in the dark about the truth. You know, the kind of darkness in which democracy dies…

While there is still a chance that Attorney General William Barr and U.S. Attorney John Durham will bring the worst government perpetrators of this hoax to justice, any hope we might have of the complicit media being held accountable for their role in this travesty grows dimmer by the day.
