You Said It, Jim Comey: Weasels and Liars Won’t Win
On Thursday, former FBI Director James Comey climbed atop his own personal Mt. Saintly to once again do holy battle with the perceived forces of evil in Washington. Clearly sensing that his carefully constructed veil of sinlessness was being threatened by a president willing to actually challenge the claimed nonpartisan values of the Justice Department, Comey took to Twitter with a reading from the Book of Pious.
“All should appreciate the FBI speaking up,” Comey wrote of a statement released about the so-called Nunes memo, in which the FBI leadership defended itself against the coming claims of political malfeasance. “I wish more of our leaders would. But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up.”
Unable to resist punctuating this screed with a zinger, Comey added: “Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy.”
Uh-huh. Good one.
But we agree with Comey in the main – weasels and liars will not win in this battle for America’s soul. We just don’t happen to agree with the former director about where those weasels and liars reside.
We’re going to stake our claim with the people who are trying their best to get information out to the public – not those who think we must be shielded from the truth for our own good. Call us old-fashioned, but when one party is making an effort at full transparency and the other one is doing everything they can to put a lid on the evidence…we’re going to side with the transparency. But hey, that’s just us.
We’re not yet sure whether Comey is a boy scout caught up in something above his pay grade or a willing, complicit stain on the integrity of the FBI and the Justice Department. Certainly, he made mistakes. But whether those were truly mistakes done in service of attempting “the right thing” or whether they were part of an Obama-led conspiracy to throw the 2016 election to Hillary Clinton, we don’t know. We’re tempted to view Comey as a good guy who got swept away by forces that were beyond his control, but that could be our forgiving nature getting the best of us.
In either case, we’re past the point where a guy like Comey should be able to see what’s really happening to the presidency. Unfortunately, he’s got too much of his own pride and misguided loyalty to the Bureau wrapped up in the situation – it’s blinding him to the truth. So whether he was a complicit actor in the Democrats’ attempt to dethrone the rightfully elected president or a useful idiot in those schemes, he would do well to keep his mouth shut and climb back down from the mountain.
